Can anyone point me in the direction of a decent guide, or indeed guide me themselves, on how to take decent pics with my nikon coolpix?

I keep reading how much you all love pictures and so do i
Its only fair that i should post a few of my own, but they all turn out awful.

Each digital camera has different settings and functions for taking great pictures in any environment.

You can either google your camera for how to's. There are loads of camera/photo forums around the world.
    OR
Just play around with it in different environments and you'll slowly start to learn of its capabilities.

Some hints I've always found useful.
    - Don't use flash if you don't have to. Flash is only there when there isn't sufficient light. Natural light is best or light even your aquariums T5 lighting always looks a treat. There's nothing worse than seeing somebodies tank with a huge flash across it making the tank look dark.
    - Digital macros is great for taking closeup shots. But your object must be STILL.
    - Play around with the eenvironment functions, you'd be surprised with how some of your shots will change.
