Mate they are gorgeous.

They look so very similar to my Altifirons. What's the main difference between the two.

My altis also have a lot of red in the fins, and the spot on the side.

These guys look exactly the same as aripuana (Mez, that is what you have).

I have lost count how many of these I have... getting close to 15-16 I think....

I don't believe they are aripuana.

Different head shape, body markings and they have a black throat mark.

They look great... have they bred?

Thank you all for the kind words.

Ladyred: I don't know much about your fish, so can't really tell the difference. But looking at your past pics, I know they're definitely different. Mine is aka sp. Rio Negro I and sp. Stripetail. According to Weidner it has the following characteristics:

- the lateral spot lies somewhat beneath the upper lateral line (see pic #2)
- the lower part of the tail is spotted instead of stripe (see pic #6)
- exhibit 5 broad vertical bars on the flanks (see pic #4, second fish from left)
- has opercular stripe (stripe on the cheek)
- apart from the pectorals, all the fins have reddish base color on which there are bluish lines and spots
- the tips of the anterior dorsal spines are black
- etc...

ozarowana: yes, male developes hump on the head. They've bred a few times. I didn't strip to let them have a few go, so no fry yet. They're larvophilous/delayed mouthbrooder. The male and female share in mouthbrooding whereas altis are advanced ovophilous/immediate mouthbrooder and only female mouthbrood.

cheers..

I've got a couple of these that are beautiful but I'm thinking of going for a all rainbow planted tank. Bought my 2 as Rio Negro and thery're about 8cm each, sex undetermined but they are colourful. What are these worth?

Cheers,
Neil

Hi Neil,

I am interested to know where you got them from. Have you got any photo? I don't know how much they're worth and how common/rare they are. How much did you pay for yours?
