Welcome to the forum Bill.
Short gill plates is usually a genetic problem. How severe is it?
Could you possibly post a pic.

Hi Bill,
As already stated it is more than often genetic but the presence of Ammonia will also shorten gill plates in very young fish so I am told.

Hi Guys
You know I was just about to ask the forum about short gill plates on my latest batch of babies. Mine go from a few severe (culling severe) to OK, but 60% were affected in some way, and I was wondering if I should grow them on at all. Your comments made me think to hang on a few months to see how thay go....?
I admit to disappointment with this new mix of parentage, since my last three batches of Yellows all had severe peppering, despite having clean parents.
