Smallest size tank for Mini Reef

What is the smallest size tank you would use for a mini reef. I have a 280L tank and everyone I speak to tells me to save my money as I wont get better filtration than a good canister filter (Eheim 2217).

Is this true or is a mini reef better?

I would personally go for a good canister and/or AquaClear HOB on that sized tank.

with a sponge filter as well...

Do you mean a "mini-reef" as in saltwater or a mini reef as in the setup.?

when i refer to mini reef i am reffering to a wet dry trickle system

As long as it isn't a planted tank a HOB is a good option. If it's planted go for the canister for less surface agg.

If your doing a wet/dry trickle then the bio media should already be overkill, well in my case i would be overkilling.

I would be more worried about mechanical filtration, sponge filters are good and i would recommend one for any tank.

I havent got a mini reef running at the moment, as i had it on one tank in my bedroom but it was too much noise, but there is a breeding rack ill be putting together soon that will all be filtered on a mini reef filtration.
