View Full Version : Constant drip water change - Chlorine

Hi
My 8x2x2.5 is on a constant drip water change at 4l/h. This changes roughly 100l/day (10%). My tap water is great. Do I need to use carbon to remove the chlorine from the tap water or is it irrelavant at these small slow quantities?
Thanks
Brian

Brian,
I would recommend the use of a 2-stage filter, (sediment and carbon) but it would not be entirely necessary for your tank.
I have a similar set up but water is changed %400 per day.
A 2 stage filter could be set up quite easily and cost under $100-
Let me know if I can be of any further help
Cheers

Thanks for your reply Ben.
I'm thinking of setting it up so that the drip drips through carbon before entering the tank instead of placing the carbon filter on the pressure side of things. This would be easy enough to construct.
Would this reasoning be correct....
Carbon gets exhausted pretty quickly.... say in a week. A 'normal' filter pumps, say, 1000l/h, 24000l/day or 168000l/week. If I only pass 4l/h through the carbon, it should last for 42000 hours or 1750 days....
If I were to replace the carbon every 6 months (182 days) surley it would be ok??????

nice maths, but it doesn't quite work that way. Unfortunately carbon lasts for about 14 days regardless of how much goes through it and then ceases to be active.

Oh Bugger
But then please explain how home water filtration 'canister' charcoal filters last for 6-12 months...
Cheers
