As some of u would know I recently attended the ADA Party 2006. This was by far the biggest gathering of planted tank enthusiasts the ADA party has attracted in the last few years. Over 150pp attended this 2 day event.
Below are some pictures documenting the trip.
Starting off with pics on the 2nd day Iwagumi (rock arrangement) competition.

Great pics Kev.
I'm thinking of going to Japan next year and was just wondering if it was easy to get around and if the Japanese speak english  (especially the guys at ADA.)

very few english speakers in Japan. ADA has 2 guys, their international marketing manager and assitant which can communicate in English.
We can help you arrange to visit the ADA gallery if you are going to Niigata.
cheers

Thanks for the sharing the pics. What are the dimensions of the big tank at Amano's house ? Lighting ? I'm guessing 4000 litres and knowing Amano it would have about 5 x 250w halides.

4m x 1.5m x 1.5m
Lighting:
16 x 150w NAG-Green - 2400w total (4hrs per day)
9 x 40w NA Lamp T8 - 360w total (9hrs per day)
Total lighting = 3760 watts
Tank Capacity = 9300 Litres (not including water volume in filtration system)

The filter behind has another 1/3 the volume of water!!! Let me load up a pic of behind the Amano tank 2morrow.
One HUGE tank. Good choice of slow growing shade plants.

wow, that is much bigger than I thought. Nearly as big as Horst Kapper's (the founder of Dupla) in the 1970's. The Dupla founder's planted tank measured 12000 litres with 42 metres of heating cable through the gravel. I am sure Amano could get away with alot less lighting than that if he was growing low light plants. Check out Manly Aqauriums tank which is quite similar but smaller at 3456 litres and only runs on 4 x 150w MH.

Thanks Pro. I couldn't remember where I had seen the article on that tank. What a piece of work.
I've seen the tank at Manly Aquariums and it is fairly impressive too. Supposedly cost around 20k
