From the man who 'created' the turquois strains. A blue turk is a blue fish with red/tan striations. A red turk is a red fish with blue striations. The red and blue turks today are nothing on the old strains we used to keep back in the mid eighties. Most things you see these days have little throughbacks in them (EG small peppering in the faces of RED TURKS). A turk will have no peppering at all, so if you see tham like this, take them back for a resubmit. Have a good look at Samirs's photos. They are fairly good specimens for todays available turks. Have some good photos somewhere of the older strains.

ok - brain is congesting this information & setting the record straight...

When I bought this guy, I was told he is a Red Turq. Red for the stripes and 'turq." (I assumed "turQ") for turquoise background colour. (Go St George Aquarium!)

So have I been misinformed??? Is he in fact a Blue TurK (emphasising the K on turk) mmm..

When I saw the pic of the red turk posted in this thread I thought, " where is the turquoise, lol!"

So yeah must be turK (young turks run free tonight lol!)

Does anyone know where the TURK word origins from?? Is it a pattern woven in some middle eastern carpet market or such?

Hi All,

Turk is also short for Turkis, German for turquoise, the old school german breeders worked very hard on refining the turquoise strain by crossing various wilds.

Cheers,

Dee.

Thanks for that info Dee. So turk or turq is a ref. to the same thing - turquiose

So in the red turk - where is the turk/turquoise???

How would you classify my guy ? Red turk or blue Turq.

Thanks in advance.........

Hi Kerry,

Turq/Turk, refers to Turquoise ... red or blue.

The turquiose reference in the name refers to the striations on the fish ... the metallic markings.

I would say your fish is a Blue Turq, nice one at that !
