I can't believe its not butter
Funny you mention that!!
i was searching the house/kitchen for a suitable container for the killi's to spawn in and i had nothing!!!!!!!
so....i went down to coles and bought some black and gold butter, bought it home and throwed it straight in the bin!!, washed it well and there you go!!

Ben
Wed Jul 12, 2006, 01:28 PM
I put peat in the container, they spawn in it. in a weeks time i take the peat out, dry it and wait 12 weeks till i can hatch the eggs.
those little containers work great!! if you get some Nick save em for me!! i am gonna need lots soon!

can you still send eggs in the post?
Ben
Thu Jul 13, 2006, 05:32 AM
Yes they can be.
It is best to do when the eggs have just been layed as apposed to just before the hatching time.

ben do they find the inside of the container easily? i believe killies dont need a very high water level?
Ben
Thu Jul 13, 2006, 01:47 PM
GP, a male will find the container of peat very easily and sit in the middle just above it waiting for a girl to come along. They spawn very readily.
I would like to keep all the eggs at the moment, as I want to hatch them all in 3 months time.
This particular killifish species is fast disappearing from Australia and is not on the allowed import list. Unlike discus which can be imported legally.
I would like to set up a breeding program to keep them going in Australia.
20 years ago there were more than 14 types of Notho killifish in Australia, now there is 3 and they too are disappearing.

why cant they be imported any more?
To be honest i am not sure why they are not on the allowed import list. Maybe someone else can help answer this question.
how long can the eggs be dry for?
They can be viable for upto 12 months!
where they come from( country)
Notho sp come from Africa, whilst there are some species that spawn in the same way which come from South America. I have some of them aswell, although not as colourful but still very interesting!
Cheers

ben how about this idear?
when u go back to malaysia , you get like 50 eggs
of the nice looking killi, then go to garden shop get
pack of seeds for plants, the seeds in a sealed foil pack
u cut the pack carefully open swap the seeds for the
eggs then seal the foil pack then put it back in the
paper display packet so it looks the original as buy
from shop, that way when come back to australia u
get the packet home easy cos its approved sealed
disease free product. example (carrot seed packet)
just an idear, what u think?
cheers ben.

open discussion on the importation of banned fish ! nice one lmao.
you cant import fauna in any form i thought anyway?
it would be easier to mail it and hope for the best .
Ben

it would be easier to mail it and hope for the best .
The eggs would never survive the trip for starters, plus a $10,000 fine will be imposed if caught!!
Plus disease/s can come through in the media which the eggs are in!
A BIG NO NO!!!!!!

If anyone tried to do what was described above you'll end up like that lady who tried to bring in fish in her modified skirt. Not worth it!!!
Mind you we have a few species around at the moment.
N.palmqvisti (Ben'd fish - I got some too :D )
N.korthause Red
N.korthause Yellow
N.guentheri Blue
N.guentheri Gold
also there should be a few around that I have not seen last couple of years. Like:
N.foerschi, N.rubripinnis, N. sp.Lake Vic, N.rachovii etc.
In Canberra recently a killifish keeper emerged who has been keeping the same annual killfish since 1997!!! And for a long time we had thought that fish was no longer in Australia. I am sure there are some others around the country that are doing the same.
So there is no need to break quarantine bans/restrictions, just like the bristlenose, before the strick regulations came into place a lot of species were introduced into the Australian hobby.
Play smart, play for a long time!!! :thumb
