Please Help ID Discus

Hi all,
I got this discus from a guy who was selling his tank setup.
he was the only discus in the tank, and when i got him he was just plan brown in the body so i thought that this is what a normal brown looks like and after seeing a photo (or two) of common browns just figured thats all he is but in the last 2 weeks there has been colour coming through on its body. And thats were you guys come in.....

hi thanks for your reply, i thought there would have been a hundred guesses by now..

So do Red Turqs start out brown like this and then change colour?
Is this picture (below) a Red Turq? Do all Red Turqs look like this one
or is this just a real good fish? (Below)
Were can i get Red Turqs like this one?

Yes i agree that you have a red turk ... :D

& mate, most red turks will not turn out that nice ... That fish has very nice colour... :D

Yeh i was thinking that Red Turq (the better picture) had good colour..

Some one has even suggested a "Red Spoted Green Domestic"..
But the blue on my fish looks blue and not green at all, but i have to admit that the little red specks coming through on its body do look like
spots and not lines. But like i said there was no other coulour on it body besides the brown and stress bars up untill two weeks ago.

Could my fish simply be a cross? Brown and Red Turq? Or something else.
I love the colour of this discus and really wanna find out what it is
so i can get some freinds (other then my Blue Diamonds) to breed with.

Oh yeh my fish is about 5 - 7 cms.

breeding is gonna be a long time away, the colour will get better with age, it looks like it'll get some spots down the line. you can't compare colour with an adult fish, give it time and it will grow up to be a stunning fish.

Yeh i understand that it will get better coluor with age. I just didnt think
that they would start of brown.. Thoght they would look something like
the Blue Turqs..

So im guessing now, that this discus is a young fish still, and not stunted?

The guy i got him off only had him a copule of weeks and was feeding
all his fish "Mince Meat" and i mean mince meat that we eat..full of fat!!
So i was hopeing that it wasnt stunted but he is really showing
signs of growth now and colouring up well as well.
I think i might save some money up and get myself some more so i can
get him out of the blue diamond tank..

its not stunted now, future depends on how many blue diamonds you got and how large they are and how big is your tank. if its overcrowded and he's the smallest there is a good chance he will stunt.

Yep, most RT's start of brown and colour up with age mate ... infact most turq based fish, red and blue, will start life of as a brown based fish. It's hard to tell at that age, but I think your little RT will end up looking like the adult pic you posted ... in terms of colour and markings anyway. As for whether it will get to the same size all depends on your feeding and WC schedule ... remember that lotsa feeding will equal lotsa WC's.

As for whether you RT is spotted or not, it's hard to tell at that age with out seeing the parents. From my past experience with RT's most start off looking like they have spots, but infact these "spots" end up joining to create stripes (straitions). The RT's that have spots are generally from a RT x RSG cross and in general are called Red Diamonds, further selective breeding will eventaully get you leopard style turqs.

That adult pic that you posted looks alot like the RT's that Mac at OAFI has, once grownout. I bout a few juvie RT's from him years ago that grew out to be VERY similar in apearence.

I have attatched a pic of my newly aquired RT pair, as you can see they have spots, and with time they may join to creat stripes. From what I know of these guys bloodline, they have come from Red Diamond x RT and I expect some of the spots to remain, but ya never know.

yes i think its a Red Turq now.. Would never of quessed it with out
help from yous.

Discus D, they are some really nice looking fish you have there. They
actually look like the Discus on the front of "Saga Discus Food" that i once bought.. Didnt rate the food to highly but. Sorry not to sure, but will they
throw Red Turqs or a mix??

So i quess ill be chasing down some more Red Turqs, but i think ill
have a hard time finding the sort i want, i think ill look for Red Turqs
more like the adult Red Turq picture that i posted. i really really
like the thick lines and i found a picture of Shimdt Focke Red Turqs and
they look alot similuar to it. Probly a deeper blue.
I wonder if any one in Australia would even still have he's Red Turq line
still going?? If it even made it here..
