Praziquantal is an effective and safe medication for the treatment of gill
and body flukes, tapeworms and other cestodes and trematodes in
ornamental aquarium fish. May be effective against Capillaria when
administered in food.
DOSAGES:
Bath:
Add 2.5 mg/Litre or 100 mg/10gal of Praziquantal (premixed) to your
aquarium. Allow medication to remain in the tank for 48hrs. Mechanical
filter may be left running but remove charcoal or other chemical filters.
On the third day replace charcoal and begin daily water changes of
10% to 30% for the next 5 days. On day 7, repeat the entire process. On
day 14, a third treatment may begin. This would be prudent for tanks
with gravel substrate and no under gravel filter. (See PREPERATION
below)
Fast Bath:
Add 15ppm or 15mg/L of Praziquantal to a small medical tank. Insert
affected fish for 2.5hrs. (See PREPERATION below)
Medicated Foods:
Mix in 400mg-500mg of Prazi per 100g or 1/4lb of food. Food is typically
beefheart or beef liver ground in a blender and frozen for future use.
Two or three feedings every other day should be sufficient.
PREPARATION:
IN WATER:
When preparing Praziquantal for use in one of the baths, dissolve the
needed dose in a glass of warm water. This will require several minutes
of stirring, as Praziquantal does not dissolve well. Even after much stirring
some medication and a film deposit will remain. Pour this mixture
into the tank.
IN ACETONE:
When preparing Praziquantal for use in one of the baths Acetone can be
used as a solvent. This method of converting Prazi to a liquid is much
faster and easier then water. In a small container, mix together 3 parts
Acetone to 1 part Praziquantal then pour the chalky mix over the surface
of your tank.
CAUTION: Using more Acetone then suggested above can cause
Oxygen depletion in your tank. If your water becomes cloudy or fish hang
near the surface do a partial water change and add extra aeration. Only
pure Acetone, not an Acetone Compound, should be used.
PRECAUTIONS:
Praziquantal does not effect biofilters.
STORAGE:
Praziquantal should remain viable for two years when stored in a freezer.
