I have a fluval 404 and it comes with a "plastic grate filter" you place on the canister inlet tube inside the tank. This has a ball within the housing and acts as a one-way-valve.
I have just taken this off, drilled a series of holes in my tube and put a sponge over it. This was due to me getting a lot of junk tangled around my inline pH & conductivity probes which is inline with my canister inlet tube.
Why do fluval include this one way ball ? The only thing I could think of was in a power fail you may end up with a reverse flow through your filter, I doubt it though ?
