IMO, no.
However, i know some people suggest "subdued" lighting - from what i've seen, Discus do fine with lots of lighting.

i think they are less jumpy when there's lots of light and no shadows. however if you go to Sydney aquarium and see some of the river setups with the driftwood etc(barramundi,murray river cod,no discus)they are very dimly lit and look awesome.

yes and no:::
a lot of lightting together with pressurized co2 system and lots of live plants is very good because of natural added filtration
but discus like to be in the shade a lot, so the best thing to do is what i did and build some sort of shelves on which plants grow (plants also like to be closer to the surface) while discus like to b underneath them.... that is a PERFECT set up!! PERFECT....
