heater failure cooked fish yuck

hi guys

I am in very sad.... :cry:

my display tank with my adult fish just about to seperate into breeding pairs

came home from work and my tank is 41 C and all 16 fish dead :(

my heater blew up like a grenade and I almost lost my prize pair.

what brand and how long did you have it for?

this time I only use Jager heaters and replace them every few years.

Ahh sorry to hear as well.
Same thing happened to me this time last year.
Lost everything, cardinals, BN, loaches the lot.
Could have taken a bath in the water it was that warm.

Sorry to hear about your loss mate.
The opposite happened to me a few weeks back. My heater failed but instead of cooking the fish it just wasn't heating. It was a Jager and still had the on light showing just not heating.
I was lucky and had no loss but it does go to show doesn't matter what heater you use they can all fail.
Nick is right I think heaters should be changed every 2-3 years regardless.

soory to hear about that. maybe an idea would be to run the heaters through a thermostat set to cut off current to the heaters at 32 C or so. i think i'll do that.

Sorry for your loss - must be a huge disappointment to lose so many fish - especially all at once like that. Console yourself with the knowledge that at least you managed to raise/keep that many discus happy before the heater malfunction, and that you are not to blame. I've had heaters blow up in the tank, did a big water change & didn't notice the water level drop below the heater - luckily the fish survived my blunderings. Thanks for sharing I've learned something really useful from this post.

just an idea!

i own a cheapo digital thermometer that allows you to set tank temp parameters. If it drops too low or goes up over my set amount the alarm screems till i shut it off.

I purchased mine from the Age of Aquariams about 6 months ago.

Its a very basic model whihc appears to have less features than the one on APW.

saying that I had a look on AOA and i cant find it anymore. they did have another one listed. Best to speak to the store and go from there.

Try Dick Smith, I got a couple about 12-18nths ago and i'm positive it was from Dick Smith.

I think Dick Smith and Tandy have a similar device with a basic alarm.

The one on APW has an alarm for both low and high water and air temp (since if the air temp starts to increase to a certain level, the water will slowly follow)

Sorry to hear of your loss, I had the same thing happen to me too end of last year and not a pretty sight.
I prefer to change heaters at least every twelve months because you never know when a problem may arise due to heaters being submerged for long periods of time.
