Has anyone used just a plain ol' red brick stood on end as a spawning cone? Would this work? Our neighbour has a pile of them, and I'm sure he really wouldn't miss a few; a couple less to load up and haul to the dump.

sure, as long as they're the more yellowy terracotta (ie burnt at the higher temperature ... the redder terracotta hasn't been burnt for long or high enough and may leach iron and other minerals into the water) and they have no mortar on them. Mortar and cement can turn the water very alkaline very quickly.

Oh well; was a though. No mortar or anything, but they are the really red ones; guess I'll pass. Thanks for the info! :)
