Brad, what can I say. Mate you are the guru.
And I thought sending you the albinos would present a challenge LOL
Mate, I'm in awe. You make it look easy (and the rest of us know it isn't).

Merrilyn,Jim has breed wild caught (tefe green ) I think that what he called them. This is when he lived in holland and wild fish are pretty easy to buy.

Hi all
80% of the eggs went white in 24 hour so I sucked them all up.
They look as if they may spawn again soon, but they have a week to do something.
He is only in with this female as I have to keep him apart from he's mate as they fight if she not ready to spawn or have fry.
I was just trying to kill 2 bird with one stone.

Hi Nick. The albino/albino spawning is rarely done. The fry are usually weak because of the double recessive gene.
The ususal spawning is albino/normal. This will produce hybrid fry, not showing, but carrying the albino gene. These fry can then be spawned together, and their offspring will be albino. Or one can be crossed back to the albino parent, and again the result will be albino fry.
Albino fry will only result when both parents carry the albino gene.
That's why albino discus will never be cheap. A lot of work goes into creating them.

Hi Merrilyn
When they do breed the hybrid fry togeather you still only produce a small percentage of albino's if any. That is the understanding I got when reading Andrew Soh's book.Have I got that correct.

Yes because this is a recesive gene
so being the less dominant gene, it show's its head less frequent
as the colour is bred more and more it will slowly become a more consistant line
but as soon as you introduce a new gene pol with a stronger gene you will again be left with a mixture of colours
its hard to decide if you line bred for the colour or interbred to keep the strength
and that is what good bredders have to do, decide

Fascinating stuff Ryan. Do you have a chart showing the percentages of albino offspring. I remember seeing one, but can't seem to find it now.

Merrilyn,
If the albino gene is aa, the carrier gene is Aa and the RGD dominant Gene is AA then crossing two carriers will give the following cross:
A a
A AA Aa
a Aa aa
Thus, 25% of offspring born will be albino, 50% will be RGD with recessive albino gene and 25% will be pure RGD
