Sometimes you let a friend talk you into putting in a really, really BIG pond
Four thousand, five hundred litres, ten foot diameter and 3 foot deep, and yes, it will be heated :!:

Wow! I would come and give you a hand to get the pond in the back yard, if only I was in Melbourne. But then it is a good excuse to visit isn't it?
You know reading all these post from you I realised...
you live in my dream house!!!
You know I am getting a house built at the moment and eventually (couple of years down the track once fishroom and display tanks are organised) was going to put in three ponds, but looking at that  Two of those would be fine

Hi Merrilyn, Nice looking pond. We also have a 3000L pond in our yard. We use it for Africans Cichlids over the summer months. Would be interested to know how you plan on heating the pond and what fish you intend on putting in it.

actually thats a good point you raise
especially with melbourne artic climate evaporation and maintaining constant heat is an obvious issue!
do tell oh master red how its done!

Tue May 02, 2006, 12:19 PM
I rekon 1/2 dozen 400 watt hydor heaters will do the trick!

Merrilyn
Sun May 07, 2006, 09:15 AM
Above ground, under a pergola, and with a lot of ferns in pots around the outside. And a chair in there, so I can sit next to the pond and play with my fish LOL.

you can get a pool heater for that size as well as a pool filter and it might work out cheaper than aqurium supplys

i just had work out something that may heat up your pond all year round , day and night ,and cost less to heat, but it may be costy to get it done, i heard from peninsular hot spring spa in RYE , they use a bore that goes down 800 mteres deep pumps water down there and its hot in earth crust and then the water is warm that comes back up, thats how they keep the spa warm 30s deg all year, hows that? it keep your ponds warm for wild discus lol
cheers, ben
Nathan
Fri May 19, 2006, 06:45 AM
but that way u cant really control the heat. i reckon thatd be pretty costy to get done aswel. id personally go a pool heater.

Just an observation... but aren't you guys all in the middle of a huge drought???
Are you setting up a desalination plant too or are you just claiming 2/3 of Melbourne's water supply to run that thing and your other tanks? :)
Someone should build a calculator to work out the degree of addiction that we're suffering from... Something that could take the total volume of fish tanks (or ponds for whales :) ) that someone has and the amount of floorspace in their house. Then classify addiction based on how deep the water in your house would be if you dumped your tanks on the floor or something like that. I'm sure some people here would be up to their knees! :)

We are all water changing our fish tanks PJ but we no longer have showers!
Its a bit tricky taking photo's into water, as reflection takes a crappy photo. Hence the reason Merrilyn has not put up any pics. Just imagine a large big black party spa with a filter!

Pond is up and running and working beautifully.
We currently have it heated with a spa heater, which maintains the water at a lovely 25 degrees C and keeps the fish happy. No discus in there.
We found that insulating the outside of the pond has cut down on the electricity bill this winter, so it's all good.
I do have some photos and I'll post them tonight.
Unfortunately you can't see the fish in there, because of the tank being black and no artificial lighting over the top. There is a lovely colony of red horsefaces happily breeding in there, along with a saratoga, a school of silver sharks and a couple of pacu.
We've upgraded the filtration a couple of times, and now run a huge pond trickle filter as well as a pond cannister filter. Never any ammonia, even with those huge fish and their messy eating habits. :P

ahh... all she needs now so that she can take photos is just a camera with an underwater housing so that she can get up close personal and beautiful photos of her babies. :)
Yeah I guess that with that pond you could just have a bath in there. Probably a big enough system to handle the occasional bit of soap :)
