Apparently this is what viejita (spanish) means in english. I have no idea why they're called "old woman" though! Does anyone know?
Also, we're lucky we don't use swahili for our scientific names, or it would be Apistogramma mvyele instead of viejita ... which doesn't sound too bad, you may think. But imagine the poor bird-keepers whose "speckle-breasted woodpecker" would be called "kigong'ota kidari-madoa" or the "black-billed wood-hoopoe" which would suddenly be a much more gregarious, outgoing and possibly somewhat religious "goregore domo-jeusi"... (try saying that 10 times in a row!)
anyway, if anyone has any interesting facts or speculations about what a dwarf cichlid name means and where it comes from, please post it here. And please please if someone knows or has a theory, I would really like to know why the viejita is called the old woman!
