Is a 24x12x12 tank large enough for a sump filter?

I'm going to be getting either a 48x24x24 or a 60x24x24 tank in the near future. I'm thinking about making my own sump to try and keep costs down. I have a 24x12x12 spare tank that I'm thinking of converting to a sump but I'm not sure if it's big enough especially if I decide to go for the 60x24x24 tank.

The length is fine but if you are going to use a spray arm you wont get much surface area contact with only 12" to work with.

If the length is fine great as I should be able to raise the height with some glass off cuts I have. I'll give the sump an L shape look buy raising half of it if you know what I mean.

You can always make a drip plate, just another way of getting a even spread over the media.

you could alwaysmake your sump bigger by adding a top layer out of a perspec's box, it can be wider and longer than your sump so long as it drains into the sump.

plus being an attachment, you can remove it for ease of cleaning axcess etc.

it could even be somthing like an od "ESKY" or what you have lying around.

or you can pump your water out of your sump into an overhead biological treatment tank or drum. this would allow you to use a rotating hub type setup. Great water movment etc. then just gravity feed it into your tank.

this type of setup gives you heaps of room to axcess your sump and make for some great surface area for particle filtraion
