Hi Guys,

I was wondering if anyone has had experience using external heaters that connect through the outlet of an external cannister filter. I know of two brands available:

HYDOR 300w
JEBO 300w

Are they reliable, do they leak, any other problems?

Thanks
Al

Rob, have a good look at the Hydor 200 heater.
I had one about 18mths ago thinking it was a 200w heater when in fact it was a 300w. Hydor have 2 external heaters one is called Hydor200 and the other is hydor300.
Both heaters are in fact 300w. Take the hydor200 out of the box and look at the stats on the heater itself, you'll see it has it as a 300w heater.
I think both heaters are different sizes and the 200 or 300 stands for the tank sizes they heat.
I could be wrong but check it just to make sure.

Hello Anubias,

From memory the main diff between the Hydor 200 and 300 inline heaters is the inlet/outlet size. The 200 being 12mm and the 300 being 16mm, depends on what canister you want to use it on. I have had a 300 Hydor inline running on my tank for a few months now and it's held a very stable 30c, I highly recommend them. Best thing is, there's no heater in the tank cluttering it up

Cheers,

Dee. :)

Hi Crocky,

I've ordered one from interstate. Follow this link to see a pic of it. I'm happy to take photos of it installed once I get if you want.

Hi All,

I fitted my external Hydor today, for me it has 3 definate advantages:

1, I don't have a heater in my planted display tank
2, I can control the temp from outside the tank
3, I don't have to turn the heater off when water changing

It is a good solid unit and at the moment holds the temp very well. The 300w has connections good for 16mm cannister filter pipes. My cannister has 18mm pipes so I had to improvise with some connectors. If anyone else has to do this conversion, don't go to Bunnings, they didn't have what i needed. I went to an irrigation place and got it there. I've attached pics.

Anyway, i highly reccomend it
Cheers!

Hey,
I run the 300w on my 4x2x2 and it works a treat. Accurate themostat and easy to hook up. Best thing is they dont need cleaning as you can see straight through thte thing so nothing can clog it up  definetly worth it,
Thanks

I'd say easily, i run one on my 4x2x2 and is perfect as it has constant water passing through it I'd say its more effective than your standard heater at spreading the heat around,
