Water changes

how do u guys do water changes do u use a bucket or a pump

if I am only doing a 5, 10, 20% water change I do the bucket shuffle...

anything higher and I drop a small powerhead into the tank with a hose attached to it which makes it a lot quicker.

lucky for me mine's now semi automated

turn a tap on, disperses unwanted water

turn the tap off, replaces fresh water

no buckets for me

just my fish, my computer and a tap! :wink:

how could you handle maintence free?

i've heard if your not online

your working on th website that are online

or maintaning your tanks

or pouring cuppa's

you don't need a maintence free tank you need a maid!

back to the topic at hand..............

before i had the tap system i did the syphon, hose suffle but now i think about it i should have used a storage tank with a small sulage pump (like in a septic tank) simple yet effective.

i syphon water out of my tanks with the help of a hose and fill the tank with the same hose and a pump.

i think i have some pictures somwhere.

i made this so that it drains the axact amount of water out of my tank each time...it is attached to a length of hose that reaches outside, which waters the plants etc

like i said the hose leads to outside....

once i have drained the tank i then attach the hose to a pump in my water storage barrel and turn the power on. it pumps the water back into the tank without buckets. i have done buckets in the past and it sucks~!!!!! i have found that with a pump i can also change more water each time which is much bettre for the fish as well..


anyway, works for me

and you are right about the tape....lol
the pipe kept on getting loose, so a bit of strong electrical tape fixed it right up

i like to call it my "fish tank monster"

i got asked to price the project on the weekend and i started.... then i got side tracked pulled it apart took the sump to a glazier, got another hole cut, 20 more 1 1/4 inch PVC fittings a couple of pumps a timer etc etc

the thing has a mind of its own and to be honest i don't know when it will stop.

i've said it before and i'll say it again "I think I'm adicted to priming fuild"

Glazier charged me $40.00 a hole

my LFS charged me $25.00 a hole, he bought a drill bit to cut his tanks. Now he has no need for it and cut them for me because he can

You can buy the drill bit yourself for $180.00 + GST depends on how many friends need holes cut and how many you need.

Bulk Heads come from my loacl irrigation/ pump shop they call they "Tank Throughs" i don't know how much they cost me. but i know i buy them at a better price than most LFS buy them wholesale.

Going to setup that breeding rack soon, so iam gonna need heaps of gadjets and hose. And iam sick of giving Bunnings half there daily sales on one docket.

everyones best mate should be thier local irrigation / pump shop.

to buy one 1 1/4 inch union joint from bunnings costs $11.00

my guy sells them for $6.00

and this is his shelf price

and trust me, he will still make alot of money out of us. just not as much a bunnings, he'll also be glad to offer you plumbing suggestions.
