Best substrate for planted tanks

Guys / Girls,

After opinions please... what is the best type of subrate for planted tanks,,, Do you use several ???

No such thing as best IMO
You have Flourite,Eco-Complete,ADA Substrate's,Red sea.
You don't need to mix any of them or layer them with anything else or you could if wanted to.
All have -/+ All great substrate's you can't go wrong with any of them.

I think first and foremost decide what sort of look you want. Do you want a dark rich coloured substrate, or maybe a lighter brown colour. What sort of plants you will be keeping, are they heavy root feeders, or not... etc etc

For instance ... you have a 4 x 2 x 2


Fish to be dsisplayed will be one pair of fire rubys.. and maybe 40-50 neon/ cardinal tetras.

have you guys heard of the soil in melton/werribee?

you can drive there and pick it up on side of road

have recieved it from another forum person

have not tried it yet

high in iron I was led to believe, great for plants??

ive been told people use that as a base then cover it in another substrate, does wonder for plants apparently,

but looks abit darker than red soil
have some,which i have not tried yet
