i am going to be doing a planted co2 tank.. i have co2 on laybe ...
would the be any advantage to using river sand or should i just use gravel...

Are you going to use a substrate fertiliser. If you are i would use the river sand. That is what i have used.
The finer the material the better for the roots and to maintain the substrate fertiliser from entering the water column.

I don't think there's any advantage in any one you use, unless you use a speciefic planted substrate,Then you don't need to fert the substrate.
I would be a bit concerned about how fine the river sand is,Might compact after a while
