Hi all,
Don't mean to stir the pot. What locality of altifrons are they as there are so many different localities?
I have similar fish, but not from the same breeder/source. I'm posting a new thread for it:

Cheers,

Questions are fine, especially when asked the correct way. It isnt so much teh locality of the altifrons, it is more the large Geophagus group that causes a lot of confusion.

Geophagus brachybranchus commonly known as the orange head.
It is quite distinct from the altifrons, being that it has Orange flashing on its head and dorsal fin, as well as dark striations throughout its body
One of the nicer Geophagus IMO

You are correct regarding the source, although not told by Andrew himself, word was a couple of months ago he lost the breeding pair.
From the research I have done over the past 3-4 months (being that I have 2 of Andrews spwan) they are either aripuana or rio xingu

Geophagus altifrons and Geophagus bradybranchus are two specie people
usually confuse with
hey the picture looks identical to my branchybronchis...i think that is how its spelt
bradybrancus a.k.a black throat , hence it have a black marking at it throat region
whereas altifrons don't have the black marking, furthermore the slope of the altifrons head is more acute

Proteus, I firmly believe the fish you linked to is not brachybranchus. It's Geophagus sp. Tapajos Orange/Red Head. I think that website is wrong.
Brachybranchus aka black throat is readily available here and often sold as surinamensis as they're very similar. So does altifrons.
Here're some pics of brachy:

Can anyone comment on my fish as to what they are? Link on the very top.
Thanks,
DD

I should like to state for the record, that the ACE site does not allow any mention of this sites name, or links or anything similar to appear on it.
Reason, they dont like me personally, and, Discus are hybrids??? OMG!!!
Regardless of there reasons, the link to that site remains...
and to think, some of those fish images posted on ACE are my fish... RFLMAO

back on topic, when you look at certain websites, fishbase included, it lists the brachybranchus as an Orange Head???
very strange, maybe it is from a different locality?
as for the Black throat, it is clearly visible that altifrons dont have this.

Well I hope the thread stays there. I would really love to learn more about the altifrons. There still seems to be a lot of confusion about the different species. Hope someone can come up with some answers :P
