I have good success with water that is a PH of 6.4 and a GH of 28 PPM.
We are lucky that Australian water is good for breeding discus in most areas.

Anything with a pH under 7 and a GH under 30 seems to work well.
You will have a higher hatching rate if you can get the GH down to a lower level. High GH prevents the eggs from becoming fertilized.

my discus tank
ph 6.4-6.5
gh 8 or 143.2 ppm GH
maybe this is why they have not layed eggs since i got them... looks like im going strait RO as the ro is 30 tds (total desolved solids)
when doing so im guessing im gonna have to watch out for ph crashes etc...
any more info is muchly appreciated.

The best way to reduce the TDS is to make up a mix of ro and normal water.
Maybe a %30 ro to %70 tap water mix might work well.
Just dont go %100 ro water!
What sort of filtration do you have on the tank?

just a sponge, heater, cone, driftwood and plant.

Making up an RO/tap water mix will lower your GH and should fix your problems.
If i can be of anymore help let me know,

Phear,
Is that a typo, TDS 30 and yet a GH of 8 and PPM of 143? Your GH of 8 roughy equates to your ppm but the TDS is way out. What are you using to measure your TDS?

i just meant that the ro i get is 30 tds which i was thinking i was going to have to use just that!

RO should have a TDS of 0, everything has been taken out of it. My apologies if I have misunderstood.
