Gday all,
thought Id post a few pics of another setup of mine. The idea was to design somthing that was less clutttered from an internal perspective.
( somthing that kept the tank very clean on the inside so that the breeders could concentrate on the job at hand )
I thought I'd also post pics on what I used in the process.
Chosen tank was a 30 X 18 x 18. A little bigger than your "normal breeder tank"

To achieve the clean tank!
everything possible had to be external!
parst used as follows
Coralife 9 watt turbo twister UV sterilizer
hydor 300 watt external heater
ehiem classic 2213

Ive been using fluvols for a long time.
After buying ehiem I wont be going back! so very quite and still managed a nice flow rate despite adding on the U/V and Heater.

Nick , why dont you just use sponge filter for breeding setup ?
Its really cheap and great for fry later on ??
Just a thought

This is what it looks like for now.
However tomorow I will be changing the location of both the internal and external pipes.
External rain bar will go horizontal with water surface.
Intake will be higher up, and foam to cover the inlet section.
As you can see its pretty sterile just the way I imagined it would be.
I'll post pics in the coming days to show you what it looks like with the finest pair of Discus I have at the moment.
Big thanks to Ben who supplied parts and helped out in the setup!!
Your da man :)

Been there Dr V.
It comes down to a couple of personal choices.
1. In my opinion you dont get the same clean ( polished ) water quality that you get using a cannister.
2. I also want to get away with missing the occasional water change. With a sponge filter I feel you really cant do that.

Oh also .. Price really wasnt a factor.. these parts arent exactly cheap but that wasnt an important factor on this occasion.
in relation to fry ...we have other tanks for those!

Great set up Nick!
I like the fact there is very little clutter visible in the tank.
Personally i am a "sponge man"
But i have had young brooders not take good care of there fries and they go straight for the sponge!
A set up like this will eliminate such problems and when the time does arise with fries, fine gauze over the inlet of the canister will prevent any getting sucked up!
8 pairs in a set up like this would be great, except for the bling bling spent setting it up 8 times!!!
Cheers
Ben

Cool setup nick, keep the pics coming tomorrow.
Yeah you're right that you can do less w/c with cannister filter.
But i do w/c everyday, that'll keep the water nice and clean.

Nice work
I like the idea of using a canister as well. I feel that you can always slow the flow rate down for fry etc, athough not proven on my behalf.

Thanks guys and girls
Darren ive used cannisters in the past. I just use a sponge for the outlets and inlets and cover those with white dacron.
It kills the water flow !
with this tank the water flow is pretty slow enough not to disturb the fish!, so ill just make sure the inlet is covered properly.

very nice set up :D hope it proves to be sucessful!
i have been thinking about a sump system for brooders lately. i want to try and make a setup where all brroder tanks are on the same system so that all water conditions are the same and less clutter in the tank and hopefully it costing less than individual setups like this one.
in my personal experience i like to be able to skip a water change every now and then as it sometimes has to be done. i find that sponges in brroder tanks are far to big for the size tank being used which is quite small to make sure the fry stay with their parents. also the heater being inside the tank and i would like to use uv on brooding tanks. it is very hard not to dissrupt the pair when cleaning behind the heater and sponge filter, also moving the sponge around to clean the glass and get up all the waste. makes the pair very shakey in my experience.
looks great and good luck :D

Will post pics up late tonight when I get home from work :)
