Hi everyone,
I am a bit horrified by all the posts about how bad our (Sydney) water is due to our low dam levels. I am going to buy a filter for the tap and initiate using a big storage barrel to hold it in for a few days.
Can anyone suggest where I can buy a barrel suitable for this? Is plastic ok or will it leech??
TIA,
Kerry

Hi Kerry,
Here is a link of what the drums looks like:

Not sure where you can buy them in Sydney but i am sure some other Sydney members will be able to steer you in the right direction.
Make sure when you buy them they are food grade drums and have never had any chemicals in them what so ever!
When you buy 1, simply give a rinse with water, and then add some no name brand unscented pure bleach, give a good scrub then rise a few times and leave in the sun for a day or 2. Then it will be ready for use.
When you buy a filtration unit make sure you purchase a good one.
If you need help let me know.
Cheers

Kerry,
A good place to look is Home Brew shops. For a 220ltr Drum you should pay about $20 or $30.
If you need further info let me know.

Reverse garbage in Marricville sell those barrel from $5-$20 depending on size.
They also have filter wool (white). One huge bag for $10 will last you for months.

I had trouble finding a supplier in Adelaide, tried the Brew shops but they wanted +$100 for a 100ltr barrel, eventually found a place called Paramount Browns
who specialise in
"We are always buying & selling all types, any quantity, second hand machinery, scrap metal, factory surplus, new hardware & workshop machinery"
Got a great food grade 76ltr for $10
