well, i replaced the substrate with a coarser sand layered with laterite. here is a sample pic. please let me know what you all think.

thank you all for the comments. i lost alot of plants due to the old substrate leaching out all the nasties. i'm still playing with the aquascape, so i'll post some new pics soon :D
