hi all,
I got 2 male marlboro reds 1 marlb female and 1 red melon female from sls.
Only one prob...
the 2 marlboro reds (male's) are well...there heads are shaking and they are cleaning a spawning cone and beating the other discus in the tank.
Can 2 males do this? i have only seen this behavoir in male/female discus preparing to spawn.
Maybe they are not 2 males and they are paring?
I am in the opinion that i have a pair and well...might have young soon.
wow,this is blowing me away!
Kev,gimme a hand here plz mate, you 100% sure they both male?
i am not complaing at all if they are not :D

Check the breeding tubes Rossco. The female has a blunt round tube, and a male has a smaller "v" shaped tube.
I've seen 2 females cleaning and laying eggs together, but never two males cleaning a spawning site.
I think you just might actually have a pair there. :P

yep
odds on you have a female there.
ive also seen two females lay eggs together but if you are certain that this option is out you will have a female for sure
update please!

Yep water changes will do it every time.
Looks like you might have to get a breeding tank ready for those guys.
Congratulations.

well...they are still cleaning, swaping between 2 cones i have in the tank,i guess they will find the right place to lay sooner or later.Going to do another lil water change here soon and feed em meaty foods, they go nuts on frozen bloodworms and discus dinner.
I dont now why they are not interested in dry foods, did they take well to dry foods when you had them Kev?
And ladyred your new luvly discus from SLS, are they taking to dry foods?
Thanks.
I am going to seperate them later,i want them to build a strong bond for each other. And if this is there first time at spawning they might not do it right the first time.

Rossco, we feed them with colourbits and Fish Fuel Co "Discus Dinner", supplemented with bloodworms and brineshrimp.
Prior to us feeding with colourbits, I don't think they ever tasted dry food in Penang.

ammm would you believe they are still cleaning and courting each other?
geeez i never seen discus clean a site for so long.
They must be male/female as 2 male's dont do this.
Clean, clean, clean, clean, head shake, head shake, head shake is what i am seeing every day, hmmm.
Think i should put em in a breeding tank? or let em continue to bond?
Also they are taking dry food now, they dont like pellets but they do they flake food

I would let them lay eggs in the tank they are in first, incase the eggs are infertile or something......
geeez i never seen discus clean a site for so long.
Maybe its cause u dont keep ur tank clean  ....just kidding.... :D
U have a fair bit of algae in the tank dont u?? It may be that they cant get the algae off the spawning cone....u never know.... :D

yeah true,i do have a good aglea build up sadly.
I think i will leave em in the community tank and see what happens, more so now with the news below.
News update, the one big Marlboro Red looks like a swinger,he is now courting the Red Melon and fighting the other Marlboro Red away.
Red Melon is a female, and yep they are both doing the courting dance and head shivering thingo.
Keep ya updated.
Sure is entertaining, alot going on in my tank.

Well they are certainly beautiful looking fish Rossco.
I'd say they are quite a young pair, and so this lengthy courtship is fairly normal.
You'll see the female begin to make trial runs up the breeding cone, and that's when you know that they are preparing to spawn.
In me meantime, keep up with the water changes, and enjoy the show. :P
