Hi guys,,,can anyone please help me get some of these metro(flagyl)??
i've gone to 3 doctors to ask for prescription, i explained to them what i needed it for and all of them have just said they cant do it unless i have a symptom myself they need to prescribe for me.
also i've asked all the vets around sydney and they have said they dont want to prescribe it.
i was fortunate to be put through to a vet who deals with fish, but the only way i can obtain this metro from him is if i take my fish in to him. after the consultation and test they will do, it will end up costing me well into the hundreds, not that i am a cheap bastard or anything, but im sure many of you fish keepers out there also dont have these money to throw away just to treat some fish. Especially when we have so much information on this forum to guide us as to what disease our fish have got and how to treat it!
i've asked the pharmacy what the cost is for flagyl and it is $16 for 21tablets of 400mg.
so if anyone out there has any idea on how I can obtain some flagyl, please PM me. I never thought it would be so hard to get this metro!

Goldy,
The only way I was able to get flagyl was to bite the bullet the first time and take a fish to the vet and pay the piper. I made no end of phone calls and no one would give me any without seeing the fish first.
If you sound like you know what your talking about and build a bit of a repoir with the vet it's a fair bet it will be far easier and less costly the next time you need some.
For the record 250 x 200mg = $72, I knew there was another reason I loved Queensland!

In my case, I just turned up there and tell the vet that I need some metro.
Then he asked me why whould I need metro for ?
Well , I just told him that my fish is sick and this medication is best for them. You will also need to tell the vet about the dosage. 1 tablet for 40L.
Good luck.

I need help on dosage rate.
I have the Flagyl(400mg) metro in tablets form. My tank is 560litres but im goin to remove one third of the water, so i'll be dosing about 350 to 400lts.
1)How many tablets do i need to use per litre and also how often?eg once a day or twice a day or??
2)also during medication what temp should i be having it at?right now it fluctuates between 28 to 28.5
3)Is it alright to have the water splashing on the surface all time from the spray bar during medication?
Any advice welcome,,thanks!

Goldfish have you got a spare heater and a small tank? If not, if I were you I would go to Clints Warehouse or Big W and buy one of those small tanks they sell for kids goldfish (about 36 litres). It works out cheaper to dose with metro this way, plus you have always got a hospital tank on hand for emergencies. You won't need a filter, just an airstone, as you will be doing frequent water changes anyway. When my fish was sick I used 400mg metro tabs at the rate of 1 and a quarter tab. to a tank of this size.
There is a post in this forum under "Hole in the Head" by luisprado where Ladyred replies and explains how to use Metro. Read it, it is worthwhile reading.

So share the secret...
How did you extract the Flagyl from your vet/doctor??
Did you have to pay top dollar?

yep i have a hospital tank!,,i'll treat it in there!
but im just wondering,,shouldnt we treat the main tank aswell even though there is no discus in there, other fish in there might carry the disease until we put the discus back in and the cycle starts again!

What other Fish do you have in your tank Goldfish?
I'm not an expert - just a beginner feeling my way slowly like you, so if I were you I would check with Ladyred first, as some fish (scaleless types) can't handle Metro.

Goodonya Littlefish!!.
What I would suggest for those who are having trouble getting Metro from their vets is to do what I did :
I printed out Ladyreds Instructions for the treatment of Hex where she provided the correct tablet to water ratio and I took it along to my vet. She actually photocopied it for her own use and she provided me with the Metro no problems.

i was only kidding with the worm and brown skin!
when i went back to my vet and explain to him what is wrong with my fish and what is needed to treat it,he wrote a prescription for me. its just that the last couple of times i went there to see him he wasnt there,it was his fellow partner so she wouldnt prescribe it for me.
i have known the vet for over 10 yrs, i get my dogs and puppied vaccinated by him regularly.

Thanks, Merrilyn. I haven't used Metro much over the years, mainly because I had to pay heaps for it. I'll let you know if I have a win.

Goldfish, all the fish you mention should be fine with Metro. Were those altums wild caught fish?
People seem to have a lot of problems with wilds.
Fred, keep me posted.

Thanks, goldfish, but I live in a redneck country area where fish is fer eatin' not pamperin'. They already think of me as a crazy greenie city boy. I will ask, but I ain't doin' no pesterin'.
One time I asked the vet to come out and euthanise one of my goats. He said 'What, you don't have a gun?' Then he suggested I borrow one from my neighbours!
I can get by without Metro - just interested to know if it can be had at a reasonable price. My wife is going in to Brisbane today, so I'll get her to ask in there.

Merrilyn, yep the altums i had were wild caught!
does anyone know of someone that has bought a large amount of wild altums lately? because I bought it from Trans Aquarium in Sydney and the owner told me he sold 100 to someone in Melbourne a few weeks ago!
wow Fred, sounds like a wild town u live in!hahaha
hope you and your neighbour get along really well!!hehe
what margot said about printing out the paper is not a bad idea!!!! do u know any family friend who is a doctor?? or maybe someone on the forum can sell you some!

I don't actually need any Metro at the moment - just interested to see if we can find a way of obtaining it with less hassle.
Our family GP (in Brisbane) has been a good friend for some 30 years now, but I wouldn't put him on the spot about writing scrips, especially as his erstwhile partner was charged over being a little too free with his prescription book, if you know what I mean.
My dear wife said she would go to a vet while she was in Brisbane yesterday, but she bought a new stereo for the car instead and forgot about the rest. She has sallied forth to the big smoke again today, clutching a print-out of Merrilyn's advice, and has promised to go to the vet first. I'll keep you posted.

OK, so...
Two vets were approached, but both insisted on seeing the fish before a prescription was written. However, one provided a useful contact:
Bob Donally
University of Queensland
Phone: 3365 2110
Apparently Bob specialises in fish and can discuss symptoms over the phone then fax a prescription to your local vet or you can pick up from UQ. Well that's what the vet said anyway.
