are there too many plants in this tank?

Im not really good at the downloading yet maybe this picture is better
My tank is five feet by two by two and I have three discus about twenty neons seven cardinals two plecos and a couple of catfish

Well, I can see substrate and wood, so I doubt there are too many. Generally, I can't think of a tank having too many plants unless you had tons of stem plants so thick you can't even see in the tank. It would only cause a problem if your fish couldn't even swim... other than that - keep adding plants! ;)

I have posted two pictures of the same 4ft tank. In the first there is too many plants. In the second the layout has changed and you can see the fish !!! Once I got the hang of growing plants I realized the importance of being able to see my fish !! And for those thinking where are the discus the last picture is for you !!!

cut out Discus... the most hardy variety known to man

Proteus you are right they are hardy these cut out Discus. They are easy to breed and as you can see they all breed true same colour and size pattern ect.........


Endless the plants in the fore ground are Blyxa japonica the ones behind them are Eustralis stellata.

Seriously Mango I have Australian and New Guinea Rainbows in this tank.
( no Discus :( )

I need to brush up on my Photo Shop skills. :oops:

I'm thinking of adding some Silver Dollars in say 6 to make a school.

Do you think I should go for some Red Hook's or Spotted ?

Do you think that they will nip my Rainbow's ? As that is my biggest concern !!

Oscar, u have too nice a tank to have silver dollars or red hooks in them. There's a reason why u don't see silver dollars in any planted tank layout... They're savage vegetarians! :lol:

Hey Oscar,

Your tank is nicely presented.

I'm with Kev and Junior, the only reason you'd have silver dollars is if you want to tell people you own a vegetarian piranha. But this is not a place for people to try and tell you that your personal taste is incorrect, so if you want silver dollars, go for it.

Just remember it'll be like trying to keep a planted tank with Malawi Cichlids in it. At least you'll get an opportunity to by a wide variety of plants and discover which ones are your favourites!

How are your rainbows going. i used to have a rainbow tank but kept having a lot of aggression issues, particularly with the smaller varieties.

Thank's guy's for the comments and advice. I might just try a cut and paste version of the Silver Dollar tank. :lol:

Oscar so far I have had no problems with the Rainbow's other than they are prone too getting ulcers. Perhaps I am not doing enough water changes !!

When I get a bigger residence which I am planning I will be getting back into Discus.

I also want to try and breed Cardinals and Rummy Noses to creat my own school of fish and for the challenge.

Well I was sucked in big time..... was just thinking how amazing those discus were and how effective it is to have all the same type in the tank.. DOH!!!! Now I know I am definitely a natural blonde!!!! :oops: :roll: :wink:
