Substitute Filter Media

Hey guys, I dont have any commercial filter media laying around, so Im wondering would it be possible to substitute the finer ceramic material in the top layer of a canister filter with something common, such as crushed up ceramic tiles?

Its only purpose is to provide a medium for bacteria to gather on correct?

why dont u use filter wool ?

Well, I have a fine filter pad the upper most layer, but no ceramic material beneath it.

Problem solved now however, I have used some out of my other filter.
