Fluval 304 media

I am running a 304 fluval on my 40 gal tank. I have been using carbon in the bottom chamber and am thinking of discontinuing use on the advise of others on this site. What would be a good alternative as a prefilter before the bio media? I was thinking maybe filter floss.

Filter floss will be fine. That's what I use in my filters. Helps to keep the ceramic noodles nice and clean.
