I am new to the Discus game and have taken note of the importance placed on maintaining a stable environment for the fish.

My pH currently sits at 7.0 and I am using a product which contains phosphoric acid to lower the pH. This in turn encourages a rather ugly brown alga to grow in the tank.

What products are others using to moderate their pH and control algal growth.

Before anyone asks I hvae no idea what the hardness of my tank is (pine rivers water) and I change about 50% of the water weekly. Not as often as many here suggest, but the best I can do with the time available to me and the fish seem to growing quite well.

I will look to post some pics soon (camera battery is flat  )

Cheers,

Craig

Your neutral pH of 7.0 is fine...

dont fix something that isnt broken...

when it comes time for breeding, then look at maybe dropping it down to 6.5...

The Discus more than anything love a "stable" enviorment over the lower Ph. My tank sits at a constant 7.0. If you keep adding things (chemicals..ph up and downs and such) to your tank you will end up with ph swings and a very "unstable" tank and then you are just asking for all kinds of issues.

Thanks for the advise.

I have added peat moss to my fluval filter in some old stockings after reading an earlier post on the forum.

This seems to lower the pH gradually without causing any wild fluctuations.
