I have been told off a expert breeder that when breeding discus you shouldn't mix the strains e.g white diamonds should only breed with white diamonds, and should not cross breed with any other strain. But I notice that a few people on this forum cross the strains. Whats people's opions????

Most of the strains around are developed from crosses of one type or another, along with mutant forms crossing is the best way to originate new strains.

Hi Nat, and welcome to the forum.
That's a good question you have asked. If you want to keep the colours pure, then yes, you should try to breed within those colours.
But sometimes, you don't have the chance, and they will choose their own partner. As Rod said, most of the colour strains today were produced by crossing colours. It's perfectly acceptable.
