max number of discus in 1 tank

we have a 4ft x 18 inches x 18 inches
i was just wondering what the maximum number of discus you would recommend putting into the tank (there are other species in there too)

That would depend on how big your filtration is, how often you do water changes,and how many other fish you have in the tank.

The usual rule of thumb is 10 gallons or 40 litres for each adult discus.

i think i worked it out at about 450 litres, and with the other fish aswell, i came up with about 6-8
i think we are using a canister filter (no idea what type) gf has been keeping fish for a while, i dont have much of an idea, but learning fast.

I have a standard 3ft tank and I squeeze in 6 discus and 2 cardinals.

Bit overcrowded according to 1 adult/40litre, but im i cant help it :D

filtration is important....just make sure the waterflow does not upset the discus, as they love slow moving water, you can place the fresh water inlets well apart to overcome the waterflow problem....Jim

With a bio-load like that, you need to be doing 50% daily waterchanges. What size are the discus.

If they are small you'll be fine for a while, but as they grow, even all that filtration won't help.

Any chance of getting a bigger tank for them?

i agree with the overload........in my 420 liter tank i have 8 adults and 9 juveniles about 8 months old..they seem happy even to look at it seems to me that is is enough......any more would be too much......Jim
