Best substrate for display tank

Hey all I'm going to setup a display tank,nothing too big and was wondering what's the best substrate to use.
As I want to keep it as clean as possible.
What are your thoughts

As clean as possible = glass...

But play sand sold at bunnings for like $8 a bag (which thickly covers a 2'x2' surface) is nice and lightly coloured.

id go bare bottom.

if not go pool filter sand no deeper then 1/2 inch
