Personally I like seeing some competition so welcome Abyss.

I recently (couple of years ago) purchased a 6x2x2 and paid close to $1000. I contacted a couple of tank builders at the time and was told that they couldn't buy the glass for less than that let alone build a tank.

So when I see the prices quoted here I have to ask myself about the specs of the glass. My current tanks are 10 mm glass and have presented no problems. I am also sure that there are different "standards" relating to glass, the glass mix and capacity to bear weight, etc.

I also wonder how it is that an established builder is able to discount his current price list by 20%, surely there must be a better than break even margin at the new price. If you are able to discount by 20% against a newcomer that to me would seem to indicate taking advantage of a monopoly or, engaging in price fixing with other companies within the industry.

Hopefully competition flourishes and we get a good quality product at a reasonable price.

I have spoken to the fish tank guy and he said that even after negotiations with suppliers that he still wouldn't make any profit on the extra 10% discount but he was willing to do this because of personal history with custom built.
I do agree with your question about quality of glass etc. If no one else can get the glass for that the same price (and i have asked around) it would seem that something else has to be reduced eg quality of glass silicone etc.
One thing i do disagree with is the fact that abyss is a newcomer to the market because custom built has been around for years.and abyss is custom built.

Are the glass quality really that much better? As some custom builders sell 4x2x2 polished all round with a good finish for around $250 in melbourne and I know someone can even do a 4x2x2 for $250 with Starphire front but doubt there's any profit with the starphires quote. 10mm all around .

Hey guys, got a quote from Abyss to get a custom tank at the special price but was quoted a higher price and then not offered the discount. Ended up almost 20% higher than these prices. And yes, I asked for the quote before the expiry of the offer.
