Roadbase/concrete floor

Apologies if this isn't the right area to post

Can anyone advise if it's ok to forego a concrete slab for a floor, and instead use compacted rubble/roadbase under pavers? How thick would it need to be and what's the likelihood of it developing uneveness because of the weight.

Hey fatty my husband is an engineer in road construction and also a concreater in his younger days. He said too hard to answer this question!!!!
It all depends on soil conditions and what it is you want to put on it eg: fishtank, house, shed???
He said a concrete slab is a much better option.
He can probably help with a bit more info

Hi Leanne,

The ground has lots of clay in it. The shed is for fish tanks :D, mostly on 3 tier racks. Rough weight calculations come out at around 25 tonnes distributed over 54sqm's- so around 500kg's per sqm. Any suggestions are most appreciated.

Anyone with fishrooms care to comment? My main concern with the compacted rubble is the flatness of the floor, moving or buckling under the weight of water. And also, water spills might be a problem.

Steve suggests go with the concrete. If the water gets in it will go soft. Also it has to be packed very tightly and the proper machinery needs to be used.
