Do you use co2?

what is your opion of eco complete?

nice tank

duck
Thu Mar 17, 2005, 04:31 AM
Thanks
No CO2 at the moment,Considering a diy set up so i can some CO2 happening.
Also got to consider the discus.
On this tank i really don't want to go to high tech,Trying to keep it simple,On the planted side.

I have a 4ft tank with 2.2wpg CO2 just getting on top of the algae,That keeps me busy.

Couldn't be happier with Eco Complete.
Don't have to worry about mixing the layer's doesn't compact, plants respond excellent especially after a trim.
After trimming i found that it took about 7 - 10 days and i saw life,
In the plain old gravel that i had it took up to 3 weeks to see the same results.

I've tried getting some eco complete but without much luck. Where did you get it from?

kalebjarrod
Fri Mar 18, 2005, 09:33 AM
eco complete has had some awsome results

hence the reason i asked your opinion

instead of a diy co2 why not a electronic co2?

simple and efective

duck

instead of a diy co2 why not a electronic co2?
simple and efective

What i have read about them is that they are really not worth the trouble.

rtraher
Fri Mar 18, 2005, 11:43 AM
Have you tried the electronic CO2 Kaleb. I looked into it but it seemed expensive to replace the plates every 4-6 months (I think that's what they said). When I saw them running most of the CO2 just bubbled straight up to the surface and out of the water? They certainly look easy to use.

I agree the plate's cost a a lot also for that reason it seem to straight up and out.

kalebjarrod
Sun Mar 20, 2005, 02:37 AM
i have been using a electronic system for a while now and it is working well

alot of the large bubbles float to the surface but if you look closly you can see a miriad of tiny bubbles every where

also G&S sell a system which has cartridges for only $28.00

bargin!

i know pressurized co2 works better but the electronic is so simple for a starting point

this is my tank, i have not used any fert in a month

What is the red plant in the middle red tiger lotus.
Also the plant looking at the pic is to your right with a red top.

As ml29 said,

Where did you get the Eco-Complete from and how much was it per bag etc?

Thanks,
Dave.

PS. I have been looking for this stuff for ages.

kalebjarrod
Fri Mar 25, 2005, 10:49 PM
the plant in the centre is a red tiger lotus

my wpg is only 1.6 (still trying to work out how to get better wpg under that thin hood  )

the trick with tigerlotus is to pinch out any leaves that want to reach for the surface, this bushes them out heaps

if anyone find eco complete can they PM me i can't find it anywhere

duck
Fri Mar 25, 2005, 11:12 PM
Try T5's.
I had 4x fluro's mixed then changed to T5's and the difference is amazing,Mind you that they are just triphos daylight 65k rating the T5's.
You will be able to fit a few under the hood, they a so thin compared to your standard T8's.

I have red tiger lotus and it's not as red as your's.

I try tonight to post my 4ftr it's not filled in yet.

how do i tell the difference from T5's to T8's?

duck
Sat Mar 26, 2005, 03:08 AM
They are a lot smaller.
I'll take a pic of them as well.

on the lights what is the spectrum? wattage?

your tank certainly looks bright, i would be amazed to see the growth with some CO2 added

Nice tanks

duck
Sun Mar 27, 2005, 05:08 AM
Thanks
The T5's are 28 watts which they say is = to 36 watts.
They are daylight triphos 65k.
In this tank i have diy CO2 just working on a way to diffuse it better.

One thing that i have learnt about lighting,It is the intensity of the light given off than the colour.

I had 4 standard fluro's before plants grew, Since the change i get more pearling and streaming and the plants a better for it.
Plus i think the sustrate has something to help it along.

kalebjarrod
Sun Mar 27, 2005, 09:22 PM
cool

so the T5s are 26watt compared to 18watt from a standard?

One thing that i have learnt about lighting,It is the intensity of the light given off rather than the colour.

Your heading down the right path with this comment, it is the intensity of the right colour that leads to good growth. Plants use red and blue light spectrum's whilist in the process of photosynthesis. Green is not used at all. So high levels of greens violets oranges etc etc will lead to bad growth. High levels of Blues and Reds will lead to good growth.

Eco complete would certainly be helping your cation exchange capacity within you media, this with the co2 would be helping you no ends.

what do you fert with?

P.S go to the microsoft homepage they have a very useful resizing tool

duck
Mon Mar 28, 2005, 01:37 AM
It's 28 watts for T5's and 36 watts for T8's for a 4 ft.
I use aquasonic tab's every week for the root feeder's.
I dose 1 ml of phosphate at water change them maybe .5 ml during the week.
At the moment i'm using AZOO trace .5 ml everyday.
Every couple of weeks i add .5-1 ml of iron.
I do a 50%WC every week.
I have enough nitrate's from the fish ect,So i don't add any.

kalebjarrod
Mon Mar 28, 2005, 02:59 AM
so do the T5s and T8s fit in the same standard 4ft light fixture?

duck
Mon Mar 28, 2005, 03:15 AM
I just checked it out T5's are 115cm long
T8's 118cm long these are globe size's
T5's are electronic ballast when you switch them on there's no flicker straight start up.

kalebjarrod
Mon Mar 28, 2005, 07:01 AM
bugger,

so i have to get a different light fitting too!

duck
Mon Mar 28, 2005, 08:01 AM

This is super critical.......................

Very nice although after looking at the tank for a while i noticed the ricca kept drawing my eye as it is so centred

maybe just too balanced to be natural, although the overall effect is stunning

maybe the additon of a red plant might in the gap on the right may draw your eye a little

Excellent i see what you are saying,it is a little too centered.
I do have some red stem plants but it's not big enough to break it up.

My thought's now is move the riccia to the left trim the hydro,Then plant it on the left as i feel that seem's to be empty, Get my hands on some rotala macaranda and plant it between the hydro's,Hopefully then it might have a more flowing effect from left to right.
Hows that sound?

the zen of a tank is so hard to find

i have been so disheartened by my tank recently, yours is always such a insperation

rtraher
Sun May 08, 2005, 11:22 AM
It's looking great! How much time are you spending on the riccia? I've got allot going at the moment. It grows so fast and when I trim it back, the riccia underneath is dead, so I need to retie it down again. It seems like allot of work to keep it looking 'sharp' - I love the stuff though.

Keep the pics coming!

i have been so disheartened by my tank recently, yours is always such a insperation

That's why i asked, looked ok to me then you pointed out something that i couldn't see and now i am moving forward and thankyou.

This tank has taken me around 17 months to get it like this.
I had i every algea there is apart from BGA i changed this i changed that
When i Change the substrate it took another 3 month to settle not like 9 months the first time around,I knew a little more this time around,Many time's i could of *****************.
And i was thinking of doing my 6ft but that's way to much real estate.

rtraher:About every 6weeks i got to retie it, yes it's a lot work but you got to love the stuff 8-) i can't get sick of seening it pearl everynight.

i love ur glosso and riccia
what is that bush plant on the far right?

duck
Sun May 22, 2005, 02:30 AM
Thanks.
The right side is coming along nicely but the left still has to catch up.
The red plant is ludwiga arcuata it's just not doing it, i really need to get rotala macaranda then it should break it up more.

The plant on the far right is water sprite i have to trim it every couple of days or it will take over the tank

kalebjarrod
Sun May 22, 2005, 07:22 AM
i like the left a little smaller, gives a height difference

if it was all at the same level you wouldn't get the natural look you've got there

i recon it is almost there

To calibrate it, i don't it's on for young an old.

is that the CO2 line coming in on the left?

Yes you can just see it.
I had it setup the wrong way round before and wasn't very efficient,Now as you can see the CO2 at the top and the results are excellent as i only have DIY setup.

I got pressuzried CO2,Up graded the lights,I'm running 220watts which is around the 3.3 WPG.
Still adjusting the CO2 as i not running a controller at the moment i'm getting 30 ppm of CO2 6.6ph/4KH.

Can't have people think i never get it wrong :D

The cause:Pretty sure it was when i was dosing Excel to rid the tank of some BBA (it didn't work for me) i must of dose alittle to much, then a big trim, moving this and moving that,So basicly unsettled the tank in a big way, killed off some good bacteria in the process got what i believe was a amonium spike and GW came to visit.

I don't have a UV i just let it run it's course plus With some water change's,Also WC from an established tank,I kept up the fert's,Not as much under 1/2 the amount from my normal regime.

Update in the end my patience run out i only have so much nearly 2 month's  ,Then i torn the tank down and now i can see,In the process i lost 1 dicus about 15-20 cardinals and nearly lost some plants but they have come back to life,It's not something i like to repeat.
This is my new look, it need's to clear up a tad more and grow in,Overall i'm happy so far.
A couple of pearling Riccia and macaranda

The progress so far,The idea is have rotala mac's on each side(to fill in a bit more) with the center with only a couple of mac's to break the green up,Just behind the riccia i have arcuta(spelling) soon it should pop it's head over the riccia.
On the right i got baby tear's in front of the mac's,on the left i have hair grass in front of the mac's.
I'm trying to get a valley of sort's happening on ethier side of the center with a slope from right to left in the middle ground,The front will be all glosso.
The to pic are on different setting's to show the red of the mac'sin the top pic.

It's the angel of the camera that's why it look's like i have very little substrate,But i do have less than what is the norm for the amount of substrate for a planted tank, around the 1.5 inch mark.

It's comming back together nicely the main thing with anything is the waitting game
Yes now the waiting game for it to fill out i have no doubt that i will change bit's a peice's as time goes by,But the basic layout wont change much to what it is now.

T5's, and LOTS of them
I run 6 T5's 4x28watts and 2 x54watt's

I thought this time i won't muck around with the setting's of my camera.
My plan is not really happening the glosso's a bit slow to cover  So i will have to go with the flow and see how it come's out.
Here's a couple more pic's
There's no sniper trying to take out the discus,It's the Christmas tree light's

Mate your tank is always looking good

Becuase you know so much about plants etc could you maybe answer a few questions....

What is your KH, GH, PH, Nitrate and your temp of the tank.

Does KH, GH or PH effect your plant growth on most plants in the tank?

Does a UV stop most green algae on the glass and on a couple of plants anuabis (Spelling) etc?

And could you post how you have found to grow your plants thick and good looking

One last thing what ferts do you use and what brand etc

Thanks heaps in advance just need a helping hand on getting my plants to reallt take off

Thanks all

What is your KH, GH, PH, Nitrate and your temp of the tank.
My KH 4,PH 6.2,GH haven't tested in along time,So the last time it was around the 80ppm

Does KH, GH or PH effect your plant growth on most plants in the tank?
It can

Does a UV stop most green algae on the glass and on a couple of plants anuabis (Spelling) etc?
No,Adding PO4 should see it go.

And could you post how you have found to grow your plants thick and good looking
CO2,Light's atleast 2WPG at the min,This depend on what you are growing a bushy plant or stem plant, trim often,I run 3.3WPG

One last thing what ferts do you use and what brand etc
I use KNO3, flourish,Some extra potassium and iron, all seachem product's.

Thanks heaps in advance just need a helping hand on getting my plants to reallt take off
No problem

I would say about 70% of our membership is from Australia, the balance is from USA, Canada, India, England, Malaysia ........ and a lot of others that I can't recall at the moment.

I've moved your other post about lighting to the Amazon Gardens forum, where it will get more exposure, and I'm sure some of our members will be able to answer your questions.

Every single picture....in progress or the end result is just stunning! I do have a few questions also if you dont mind

In the first couple pics what is the little plant all over the top of the eco-complete? Is that the glosso? how does it stay so small...like a lil carpet?

Towards the end of all the pics, when the tank is ripped up, what is left over that creates a hill effect in your substrate?

How close together can you get away with planting plants? Or do you use mostly stem plants?

Thanks for your help, and again...wonderful job!! I only hope my tank turns out half that well in the end

Erk

Last sunday in perth we had a plant swap day and we all picked up some gooodies.

I haven't taken photos yet i will in the next day or so.
It's not arranged in anyway just placed randomly, then i will try to doc the motions and hopefuly we end up with a scaped tank.

Here is my new layout,it's not set in concrete as i want to add few other plants and do a few little changes as it grows in.
It's freshly planted so you won't see any define areas just one blanket of green.
I like to thank those that gave me a few new plants
I hope you enjoy them,I tried a coupld of different setting on the camera.
