I know people say you can never "over-filter" a tank, but would 1000lph in an 80L tank be overkill?

2217 has a real world flow of ~600l/h so yo'd be turning over your tank 7 times an hour or once every 9 min if you were keeping L numbers, they'd love it. but way too high for discus

2213 would be fine

the fish im planning to keep in there are angels as a grow-out tank (around 6-8cm) - so it will be bare-bottom and no plants etc

i just find they poop alot and i thought maybe a canister will allow me to clean the water a little less often than every 2nd day

the reason why im wanting a 2217 is so that i can use it in my 6fter later

Hiya, I've just found an Eheim clamp apparatus they use on the inlet pipe to restrict flow variably - it's a genuine Eheim part so you'd be able to turn the 2217 right down (I've got one on a 4' & it packs a huge punch) until it starts to fill with gunk again & flow drops a bit. I've ordered mine here: http://www.discusforums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=162532#162532

Reducing the flow rate will put stress on the impeller and Moter seriously grab a second hand 2213 you'll find one for $50-$70

I would've said the same thing, but this part is manufactured by Eheim, for Eheim so therefore I would put my faith & trust in them knowing precisely what they're doing :)

Even though its made by Eheim, it will still damage the motor and impeller. You can pick up a brand new 2213 for $140-150.

Sure it will, that's why they give the consumer 2-3 yrs warranty on their filters, so we can all go back & get replacement motors when one of their parts, marketed by them for the specific purpose of reducing flow destroys the motor - I think not!!!!
