After quite some time, I finely have a couple of decent photos of my male A. agassizii "fire tail". Nothing fancy, just a couple of photos for people to look at and comment on. Oh, as per normal, thanks to Ryan (japes) for taking the photos.

I posted an identification thread over on apistogramma forums for the A. agassizii "fire tail". Mike Wise the guru of Apistogramma posted the following response.

Briztoon, the fish in the photos is not the same as A. agassizii Flamenco, which is found in the Río Tigre of Peru. Flamenco has much more red/orange in the fins. Your fish are from the other side of the Amazon/Ucayali in the area between the Río Tamshiyacu and Río Tahuayo in Peru. Your Flamencos are a color morph of the type form of A. agassizii and one of the western most populations known. The fish in the photos is A. cf. agassizii (Pastel) and could be a separate species within the A. agassizii super-species. It will cross with the typical A. agassizii, but I recommend that you don't cross it. This form is very rare in the hobby. Exporters don't recognize its rarity. You are lucky to own it!

Hey Marty,

If that's the sub-dominant male from the same tank, then yeah it would be the same variant/species. I picked up a couple (the last ones) of females from the second batch of "fire tail". Though I have feeling that one of the females may be a sneeker male. There are still about half a dozen males left.

I really hope Jodi-Lea brings in some more "fire tail" and "flamenco" agassizii, but I won't be holding my breath.

I really need Ryan to get a good photo of my dominant male "flamenco" as he looks so much like the "fire tail". My sub-dominant male "flamenco is starting show a lot more red in his finage than the dominant male. I'm going to have to move some fish around to new tanks this week to seperate sub-dominant males and females from dominat males untill I know exactly which fish is which variant.

I'm not sure as I didnt get them directly from Jodi but they did come from her. Should I just keep an eye on him and see how he develops?

Oh I forgot about the substrate. It's just a fine grained river gravel, again bought from Fishchicks.
