any local rockery, garden centre/nursery or soil merchant. Let your fingers do the walking with yellow pages. :)

Most of the Clark Rubber outlets and pool shops have switched to using zeolite now instead of sand. I've enquired at about 8 different outlets without success.

I'm keen to find white silica too. If you have any luck please post the name of the business.

What type of sand is it? Is it Silica Sand?

I have a pool shop just around the corner from me that has Silica Sand as does Clarke Rubber at Blacktown.

Hi All

I was able to source it from my local Swimart Shop.

It does need a good wash though, price was $20 for 20 kgs.

Clark Rubber did not have it.

I also noticed petcare 2000 had it for $20.00 for 9 kgs but I needed 60kgs so this wasnt a cost effective option for me, although it was alot whiter.

Quarts Silica id imagine. same ingredients that make up your glass tank

Precipitation can occur at ether ends of the PH spectrum, however id suspect any resulting would be more of a colloidal silica. Your wood would most certainly draw it in.
Im no scientist, however ive not heard of adverse reactions from any use of silica in aquariums.

Id be extremely interested in hearing otherwise.

I got mine from the Caringbah Clarkes Rubber. It is true that not all Clarks Rubber sell the silica sand anymore, as I had to ring around to find it. Plus I got mine maybe 2 years ago.

So tired !! :shock:

70 kgs of gravel out

up/down step ladder


wash 60kgs silica sand ( bit scared, doesnt look that white)

up/down/up/down step ladder repeat 100 plus times

60 kgs of silica sand in (looks awesome, looks white LOL )

Replanted plants in the middle of tank with some anubias on driftwood
( yes I know they will struggle, plenty of flora 24 and excel and tabs in sand)


Slept very very well last night!!

After one day I can see why so much better than gravel
:wink: plenty of poop on top.

Easy to clean yippee!

Removed fake rock also and guess what can now see my beautiful expensive discus as they cant hide :lol: :lol: :lol:

Just need to top up with some water now!

So glad I made the change :P

I rang them direct and they could not tell me where their product was sold in my area, and were very unhelpful.

As they couldnt help me, why try and source their product then??

The misses is currently expanding the set up to hone the breeding skills before we invest some decent $$ & build something truly spectacular. Although she got abit snaky when she found out i left but one bag of sand to use :)

So today i picked up 120kg of triple washed white for $30. Not bad for not buying in bulk. Far superior deals occur when you buy cubic meters.

Sand bud, its actually penta washed as i did it again in the shower as it was still quite dirty
