In-Line heaters [Archive]

I am thinking of upgrading my heaters in my 2 big Discus tanks (6x2x2 & 5x2x2).

currently I have 1 x 300w in the 5x2x2 sump and a 300w/200w in the 6x2x2.

I like the idea of the inline heater for flexibility and control, also, less junk in the sump. Ideally I would locate it after the UV unit.

I have heard great things about the Hydor, but want some feedback from those that have either used one, or have one...

Hi Proteus,

I running a Hydor 200 on my 4fter with on problems but the previous one I had got stuck in the on position and raised the tank to 32c (This was pre discus so most of the fish I had were uncomfortable) the only down side to the hydro is availability.

Ben at AOA has the 300w model...

the main thing I worry about is the hydor doesnt have a remote sensor...

Hi, What are the advantages in using this type of heating system? Other than bieng a little more expensive , what are the disadvanatges?
In my opinion, this sort of heating is not very understood with hobbist fish keepers.

no other reason but better visual, you dont want to see ugly heater in your tank, do you?

If you can get the ones with the external probe so you actually getting the water of the tank too the set amount not the sump. Dont get me wrong i think the ones with the thermostat contained in them will still work i just like the idea of getting the reading from the tank water.

My Hydor 300w rocks Ro, they are awesome. Wish I could afford them on all my tanks.

I've got a Hydor 300. I'm not using it at the momment as I've cut back on tanks but when I was using it I found it very reliable. I found it better than normal heaters at keeping the tank at it's set temp.
I definetly don't have a problem recommending them.
One thing you should be aware of if anybody is going to buy one isthat the Hydor 200 and the Hydor 300 are both 300w heaters.
When I first got mine I got both the 200 and 300 and found that the 200 was infact a 300w heater.
I took it back and changed it to the 300.
