They currently eat live black worms and live brine shrimp.

Trying to train them to eat flake, they peck at the flake but it is a slow process :)

hard to get them to see they love alot of live food because thats what they have in the wild cost alot of money but there worth it !

have you tried any pellets alot of importers i know feed them on pellets leave them in the tank no longer then 30mins after feeding they usally peck at it on the bottom

Hi Dan,

They are stunning fish I know, I have 12 myself in a 9 foot tank and they are an absolute pig, I feed them Tetrabits and they would eat as offend as I give it to them.

I had mine from when they were less than a 50 cent coin and now they are close to 22 cm from top to bottom fin.

Just don’t fuss too much over them and get them off the live food as you have more chance of introducing parasites to your tank, get them on frozen blood worms its safer that way, also don’t forget blood worms are %90 water.

I give them green prawns, I chop it very fine and drop it in the current and they go nuts over it.

You may also want to look at worming them once they have settled in. I used Big L poultry wormer and it has worked ok for me. Can’t remember the dosage I have to look it up.

You will read a lot of different opinions on Altums and almost all are wrong and all are right. What I am trying to say is that people make mistakes and blame them on the fish; if you don’t kill them in the first month the chances are you will have them for a long time. They look healthy so you shouldn’t have many problems.

90% of the problem is in the transport and, they may have been stressed before you got them, then they would die in the first week, if you don’t see any sign of white slime and or burnet fins (red tips) then you should be ok.

Word of advice if your fish are very shy and dart away from sight when you go close to the tank, they you may want to think of getting some tank mates for them. I had a lot of success with native Rainbows, I bought the adults but you can jut get any over the size of 5 to 6cm, they will challenge the Altums for the food but at the same time will excite them and get them active.

Well good luck.

Hey Altuma

Thank you very much for the detailed reply :)

Finally have them off live food and they now are eating Sera Flora Flake.

Have already wormed them as well as I've been told alot of wilds are full of parasites :)

I plan to move them soon to a 4 foot established planted tank.

Cheers
