Hi

Is it a good idea to use activated carbon in your aging barrel water? or will the prime not do its job?

Wow, learn something new everyday :)

Doesn't the water need to flow through the carbon to work efficiently?

You'd need some sort of water circulation so that new water is constantly coming into contact with the carbon, but an air stone or heater should suffice.

It will work with a passive absorpion from the circulation of a heater or an air stone but for AC to work efficiently the water should flow or be pumped through it.

i fill 2 large air driven box filtters with carbon and just let them bubble away for 24hrs, does the trick :)
