Hi. Just wondering which salt do people use to get rid of parasites. Epson salt, rock salt, table salt or cooking salt? Thanks
John.

Merrilyn once told me that table salt has an addative to prevent it from clogging up in our salt shakers and the cooking salt was a better choice.

i read the ingrediants in all the cooking salt and table salt that woolworths stocked and it said salt and anti caking agent (554) or something like that.... is that normal?

cheers

do not use any salt with any anti cacking agents in it!

you want pure evaporated salt.

ok sweet, thanks guys.

so rock salt and epson salt is the two most common salts used in aquariums? are they both used for different purposes? i heard epson is like a detox to clean their gut, and rock salt is used for killing parasites in the tank.....

are the dosage the same for both?

thanks

John

no dosage for salt for discus is 1-2 tsp/40L, for other fish the dose is higher.

no mate! salt 1-2tsp/40L

epson salts 1-2 tbs/10L for a bath for 10 min or as long as the fish can take it.

epson salts 1-2 tbs/10L for a bath for 10 min or as long as the fish can take it.

When you do the lower dose for Epsom salt that ILLUSN mentions, that can stay until your next water change. Like he says, it's very mild. It's the stronger solution, where you're using tablespoon measurements, instead of teaspoon measurements where it's only a short time (10 mins or as long as the fish can take it).

For rock salt / table salt, I have only used it at the lower dose of 1tspn per 40L & have left it in there until the next water change.

Sodium Chloride (rock salt) also helps combat Nitrite toxicity (brown blood disease) and it can help with "osmoregulation" which is basically the fish maintaining it's fluids at the right concentration (although for soft water fish like discus it probably has the oppsite affect). I found this artical at Uni of Florida if you're interested http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/VM007
