Hi, I'm helping to set up a 6 foot, 315L tank. The hoses that come with the Fluval 405 are not long enough so that inlet and outlet are at opposite ends of the tank.

The tank will be lightly loaded to start of with and perhaps another filter will be added if it becomes too heavily stocked.

Would the filter work fine with inlet and outlet close by (restricted by the length of hoses that come with the filter)?

Or do we need to modify it with longer hoses or any other method you would suggest?

Thanks

You can buy more hose for them from your local LFS + you can buy Spray Bars which helps with the length of the water back into the Tank.

I think any decent canister filter would be ok on a lightly stocked 6' tank with the filter's intake and outlet at the same end of the tank, provided that you had a power-head blasting away at the other end of the tank to mix the water around to prevent any still patches of water from forming which does not help the filtration effect. However if I were you I would install two canister filters and put one at each end, and this lets you purchase a brilliant Eheim 2217 Classic to do that job, because its very likely it will eventually become highly stocked/overstocked and more filtration capacity is always a good thing.

I strongly believe that 99% of all aquarium fish deaths are caused by mistakes made by their keepers, and the biggest mistake you can make on any tank is not having enough (biological) filtration.
