is sand alright to use in glass aquariums. Ive always thought it was fine, just read somewhere that you must use acrylic for sand.

I would say the opposite,
Sand is fine in a glass tank, I use it myself. I do use swimming pool filter sand, it has a slightly bigger grain size, and takes minimal initial cleaning.

yeah Acrylic tanks scratch easier and although look great, can potentially leave you depressed as you wont get past the scratches when viewing the fish. Sand etc will contribute to scratches so im with Hollowman - Glass all the way. Imagine getting a little grain of sand in between the magnetic algea cleaners?
