I currently own a 75 gallon tank that I am hoping to get up and running by summer. I have lots to do (and learn) before I begin so I am trying to get all the information I need now. I plan to make this a planted discus tank with 5-6 discus and maybe a handful of tetras. I had this tank set up 5 years ago with little knowledge on how to keep discus. At the time I just couldn't keep up with the maintenence while working 2 jobs and going to school part time. Now I am ready to tackle this and do it right. I really need to prove to my boyfriend that discus are just as cool as (if not cooler than) saltwater.
First I am looking to repaint my stand and getting looking sharp. It's been in storage for some time and is pretty scratched up. I also want your thoughts on the filters I need. I previously had two Fluval 304's set up in this tank but am unsure if this is what I should be using. I also want to get a CO2 unit and was wondering what you all thought about the undergravel heating elements.
I'm concerned about my water supply. In the past I did water changes weekly and had to keep water in totes (for conditioning and such) for 24 hours before doing a water change. This is a huge hassle I'm wondering if a whole house water purification/softner (without the salt) such as the one at this website http://www.puritec.com/store/moreinfo.cfm?Product_ID=250 would be in my best interest. All the different chemicals I used to have are costly and I'd like to keep them at a minimum if I can.
Hit me with your knowledge!
