Sand. Is it messy ?

As mentioned earlier I am thinking of changing my dark gravel to sand. I have been advised by LFS that the sand looks messy as every thing sits on top. Just wondering what others who have sand think. Would I be better off going with a white gravel ?

if you plan on having discus and the sand is "messy" with organics its time for a water change anyway. thats hwy i like sand, it looks great and makes your fish look great and it even shows you when its time to vac!

mess on top is a good thing, cause you can get it all out! i like sand for that reason, all the poo just sits on top and is easily removed with a quick vac.

what about having a deep level of sand, will that become a deep sand filteration for fresh water just like the saltwater tank?
